Spin Master Internship

The work I performed during my internship had a diverse range of roles and responsibilities. Designers at Spin Master wear many hats. They create, design, manage and collaborate in many of the areas that go in to creating and developing toy brands. Being an intern working alongside these designers I had an introduction to balancing these many roles. For more information on my entire internship experience, see the link to my final internship report at the bottom of this page.

As an individual project, I worked on a marketing give away product for the Hatchimals Interactive brand. This product was to be an accessory pack for the newest Hatchimals Interactive release called Hatchibabies. Hatchimals are interactive pets that uniquely hatch out of an egg. Once hatched, hatchimals become a furry friend to play with and take care of. The accessory pack was to be given away to customers on Hatchimals day.

Working with a freelancer, we were able to sketch and ideate concepts for the accessory pack. I chose 5 accessories that would be included in the accessory pack. These included a bib, a bassinet, a mobile, a blanket and a carrier. When contacting the freelancer I had to explain the overall theme I wanted the accessory pack to have and my design direction for each accessory.

Various iterations of each accessory were done by the freelancer and myself. After modifications and suggested changes to the design, I was able to have final design sketches of all the accessories.

After the final design sketches were chosen I explored different colour palettes. I needed colours that enhanced the nature, flowery theme of the upcoming Hatchibaby line, and that were bright and excited for kids to enjoy. Many different colour palettes and combinations were explored. After consulting with the Hatchimals marketing team, the final colour palette was chosen. The final colours for all accessories are represented in the sketches below.

I consulted with the Hatchimal’s engineer to determine the most appropriate manufacturing processes for each accessory. As a result of costing and budget limitations, the bassinet and mobile were dropped from the accessory pack. The final accessory pack included a tulip carrier, a leaf bib and a leaf tassel blanket.

Tulip Carrier

The tulip carrier was designed for kids to be able to carry their Hatchibaby everywhere with them. The adjustable straps allow kids of all sizes to wear the carrier in front of them with their Hatchibaby tucked away inside the tulip center.

The tulip is made out of a two-toned laminated fleece that it soft to the touch and stretches to keep the Hatchibaby safely snug inside. The Hatchimals Hatchibabies logo is on the front petal that folds down to let the Hatchibaby peek out.

Leaf Bib

The leaf bib is a cute accessory that kids can place around their Hatchibaby’s neck. It is die cut out of laminated tricot with leaf veins stitched into the main surface. The one sided Velcro attachment makes it easy for the kids to put on and take off the Hatchibaby.

I was able to create a vector outline of the bib after making paper prototypes to test size and shape.

Leaf Tassel Blanket

The leaf tassel blanket was designed to give kids an accessory to wrap their Hatchibabies in. To enhance the blanket design and keep it in line with the nature, flowery theme, leaf tassels were added to all four corners of the blanket.

The pattern on the blanket was developed with the help of a freelancer. The symbols represent a mixture of baby and nature icons along with the signature Hatchimals speckled egg. Many iterations were adapted and changed based on my direction to get to the final design.

The blanket is made from a single layered white fleece that allows the nature baby themed pattern to pop off. The laminated tricot leaves were sewn on with a leaf vein detail.
