Float
An air plant holder
In collaboration with Laura Cheng and Nicholas Chan
Float is an air plant holder with the design intention of being an easily reproduced product using a jig system and made out of acrylic sheet plastic. The design includes three holes, located on the top of the product, which hold the air plants individually, and an enclosed base where stones or other adornments can be placed.
Ideation, through sketching and low-grade models, brought us to our final design, pictured above. The profile of the product is to resemble the traditional plant pot shape, while the final 3D form provides a modern and sleek design.
For production, the acrylic sheet is laser cut into the net layout of the final form. The laser cut piece is then placed in an oven, where it is heated until it is flexible and can be bent. Using the jig, the heated acrylic is bent into the final form. The final form is then sandblasted to get the frosted finish of the final product.
